Lands Management

Mission Statement:

The Lands staff assist the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation Chief and Council and Administration protect our Lands and ensure that our members have access to or receive the current and correct information regarding their landholdings.

Services:

The Lands Management Department oversees the administration of all transactions related to lands including land transfers, boundary surveys, land research, registration of documents and the development of policies regarding lands and leasing.

History:

While working on regular Lands business we are currently working on a number of projects. There are three Additions to Reserve proposals which Lands is involved with that are at various stages of the process. They are Indian Hills, Part Lot 61, and Part Lots 18 and 19.

In 2008 a survey of the Natural Boundary (West) was conducted which requires Chief and Council approval. This survey as well as the survey of the South, East and North boundary is required to proceed with a member vote to determine if the First Nation will enter into the First Nations Lands Management Act. As of 2004, Indian and Northern Affairs does not cover the cost of surveys. These costs must be paid by the landowner and vary in price depending on what is required to complete the work. Lands is also updating and working on policy and procedures for the leasing program. Each year Lands with the assistance of the Public Works Department replaces missing or new 911 numbers as required, so any member who is missing or requires a new 911 number should contact Lands to request one. Lands, the Public Works Manager and the Internet Technician Manager have been working together to complete a comprehensive working plan which will assist members on and off reserve when locating their loved ones in the existing Kettle Point cemeteries.
